Proposed Trim TrailThe Parish Council have applied for a grant to fund a new trim trail to be installed on the middle green at Sherfield-on-Loddon. The installation will consist of 16 stations designed to develop co-ordination, balance and strength as well as being fun to use. Each station will have information on how to use it with 3 levels, easy, medium and hard so will be suitable for all ages and abilities. Flood Plan for Sherfield-on-Loddon1.0 TYPES OF FLOOD THAT COULD AFFECT SHERFIELD 1.1 Flash. Due to overloading of ditches, culverts, etc. 1.2 Fluvial. Due to the River Loddon and Bow Brook bursting their banks. 1.3 Water run-off due to poor drainage.
2.0 LEVEL OF RESPONSE 2.1 The level of response from authorities will depend on what is flooded or what is at risk of being flooded. There are five priority categories:

2.2 So far no lives have been put at risk through flooding. However, some houses and the White Hart Public House have been affected. 2.3 It should be noted that any properties, etc., that continually flood will not receive any assistance from local authorities. Occupiers must make arrangements to protect their properties.
3.0 AUTHORITIES INVOLVED 3.1 The following organisations may be involved in direct action during a flood. Property owners are listed as it is their responsibility to protect their own property from flooding.

4.0 ACTION LISTS 4.1 ENVIRONMENT AGENCY (http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/) The principal actions of the EA are: Issue flood warnings; Receive and record details of all flooding incidents; Monitor the situation and advise other organizations; Deal with emergency repairs and blockages on main rivers and own structures; Respond to pollution incidents; Advise on waste disposal issues.
4.2 COUNTY COUNCIL The principal actions of the County Council are: Co-ordinate emergency arrangements; Maintain safe conditions on the roads; Put flood warning signs on the highway; Organise road closures and traffic diversions; Clear blockages on highway drainage systems; May take action to protect property from flooding by water from the highway where there is a failure of the highway drainage system.
4.3 DISTRICT COUNCIL The principal actions of District Councils are: Co-ordinating role for own area; Floor warning dissemination (by local agreement with EA); Emergency assistance (S138 LGA 1972) - provide sandbags; Clear blocked watercourses, etc (Land Drainage Act powers); As County Council for highways (Highways Agency areas only); Environmental health issues – pollution; Block road channels and gully gratings - street cleaning; Emergency planning support groups.
4.4 TOWN AND PARISH COUNCILS The principal actions of Town and Parish Councils are: 4.5 FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE The principal actions of the Fire and Rescue Service are: 4.6 WATER COMPANY The principal actions of Water Companies are: Emergency overpumping or tankering at pumping stations; Clearing blockages in public sewers and outfall grills; Repairing burst sewage and water pumping mains; May take action to protect property from flooding by water from the public water mains or discharges from the public sewerage systems; Provision of portable toilets in some cases.
4.7 ELECTRICITY, GAS AND TELECOMMUNICATIONS COMPANIES The principal actions of the electricity and gas companies are: 4.8 LARGE INDUSTRIAL COMPANIES The principal actions of large industrial companies are: 4.9 PROPERTY OWNERS The principal actions of owners of property at risk of flooding or which is flooded are: Move to a safe area if life is at risk; Prevent water from entering property if possible; Switch off electricity and gas supplies at mains; Move valuable possessions above floor areas liable to be flooded.

8.0 FOLLOW UP ACTION The Parish Council will supply the following follow-up action during and after a flooding incident: Keep people informed of what is going on and implement media plan when appropriate Provide information to local authority emergency planning support groups to enable them to assist and advise affected property owners Maintain action and financial records Investigate flooding and record information including flood levels Supply details of properties flooded, the extent of flooding and flood levels to the environment agency Inform piparian owners of remedial measures needed to watercourses Identify schemes to alleviate serious flooding of property (if applicable)

James Christmas Educational FoundationThis charity was set up by the will of Mr James Christmas in the 18th century, to provide resources for the education of children permanently resident in the Parish of Sherfield-on-Loddon.
In spite of the passing of time and the changing economic situation the foundation still has a small income, which is distributed at the discretion of the Trustees, and any child living in the Parish of Sherfield-on-Loddon, who has a particular educational need, may make application, in writing, for consideration by the Trustees, to the Honorary Treasurer. Applications will also be considered from any organisation catering for the educational and leisure welfare of village children.
